Peripheral nerve stimulation · Spinal cord stimulation

Nalu Medical

Nalu's system uses a miniaturised, battery-free implanted pulse generator powered wirelessly by an externally worn Therapy Disc. Its documentation identifies both peripheral nerve stimulation and spinal cord stimulation indications, and its PNS evidence base includes randomized controlled data out to two years.

The Signature Technology

The battery-free micro-IPG

Because the implanted pulse generator contains no battery, it can be made dramatically smaller than a conventional generator — small enough that it does not require the sizeable subcutaneous pocket that a standard IPG needs. A thin adhesive Therapy Disc worn on the skin above the implant supplies power and communicates with it. The clinical appeal is that the patient can effectively decide when therapy is running by wearing or removing the disc, and there is no implanted battery to deplete.

How It Works

From lead placement to therapy delivery

  1. 01

A flexible lead is placed at the target nerve, and the micro-IPG is implanted just beneath the skin.

  2. 02

The patient wears the Therapy Disc over the implant, which powers the device and delivers the programmed stimulation.

  3. 03

Programs and adjustments are managed through a patient remote-control app and the clinician programming system.

The Platforms

2 systems in the family

Each system in this family is built on the same underlying technology, but they differ in power source, size and intended use.

  • Nalu Neurostimulation System — PNS

    Battery-free peripheral nerve stimulation

Peripheral nerve stimulation for chronic intractable pain, with an expanding set of anatomic targets.

    • Battery-free implanted micro-IPG
    • External Therapy Disc
    • Targets include lumbar and cervical medial branch
  • Nalu Neurostimulation System — SCS

    Battery-free spinal cord stimulation

The same wireless-powered architecture applied to spinal cord stimulation.

    • Battery-free implanted micro-IPG
    • Epidural lead placement
    • Wearable power source

The Evidence

What has been published

Each study is given with its design, who was actually in it, what it found and where it falls short — then a link to the paper itself, so you can check any of it. Most device trials are manufacturer-funded; that is normal in this field and it is labelled here rather than glossed over.

  • COMFORT — 24-month follow-up after crossover

The study began with a three-month randomised comparison, but the published two-year outcomes pool original treatment and crossover participants without a continuing control arm. Among 46 assessed at 24 months, 39 (85%) had at least 50% pain reduction and the average reduction from baseline was 67%. See the Clinical Evidence Library for the source and attrition limitations.

  • COMFORT 2 — conference report

The company reported twelve-month outcomes at NANS 2026. A conference presentation and its comparator need independent primary-source review before its results are used to support clinical conclusions.

  • Study disclosures

Authors of the published COMFORT 24-month report disclosed employment, consulting, research support or equity ties to Nalu. Funding and disclosures for COMFORT 2 need separate source review.

These are the studies specific to Nalu. For the trials that shaped the whole field — and for how to read an industry-sponsored study fairly — see the clinical evidence library.

The Trade-offs

What to weigh before choosing this platform

No system is the right answer for every patient. These are considerations to discuss with the clinician who knows your history.

  • Therapy is delivered only while the Therapy Disc is worn — an advantage in flexibility, a limitation in continuity.

  • Skin tolerance of a daily adhesive wearable varies between patients.

  • The very small implant profile can be an advantage in thin patients or awkward anatomic locations.

Regulatory status

The Nalu Neurostimulation System is FDA cleared/approved for its labeled PNS and SCS indications for chronic intractable pain.

Indications, contraindications, warnings and MRI conditions are defined by the current labeling. Review the manufacturer's Instructions for Use at nalumed.com and discuss them with your physician.
